Getting Rid of Moles In Yards and Lawns
If there is something you don`t like, it`s someone lurking on your lawn. Well, what about not on your lawn but underneath it? Yep. You probably noticed dirt mounds and raised ridges going here and there. These ridges are made by moles that live inside the earth. The only way to stop moles making a labyrinth matrix in your lawn is by controlling them; specifically getting rid of the moles as fast as you can.
It`s important to understand that moles don`t just dig and stop, they do it all the time. Almost every home owner’s garden story starts something like this: “Well, at first there were only a few dirt piles each morning and it wasn`t that bad, but after couple of days my lawn became a field of volcanoes and zigzagging grass marks”. Moles dig under your lawn in the search of food; if you have a lot of mole activity it does not mean you have a colony living there it`s usually just only one or two moles.
A single mole typically controls anywhere from 1 to 3 acres of land. So removing just one mole will usually stop the destruction of your yard. However, there is always a possibility that other moles can migrate to your lawn from nearby properties. There are many tactics of how to get rid of moles but most common sense solutions like, tunnel flooding, gassing or baiting work poorly or can even be dangerous to humans. There are two ways you can go about removing moles:
1. Hiring a professional to do it
2. Trapping moles yourself
Hiring a Professional
Getting a company to remove your moles is a fast way to get moles out of your garden. Animal removal services usually use two tactics when dealing with moles; one is they kill their food under your yard with powerful toxins and the other is that they trap them. Whichever way you choose will depend on your own judgment and the cost of the mole removal service. Most companies work either on yearly contracts where you pay them$ 400-600 a year to keep your moles under control or they do one time jobs from $60-100 depending on the firm you choose. If your lawn is in really bad shape and you don`t mind spending a few extra dollars to get rid of moles, than going with a professional pest control company is good a choice. However, if you want to reduce the cost and have some fun, then trapping the moles yourself is the way to go.
Trapping Moles Yourself
Trapping moles can be an easy task when you’ve got the right trap and the right knowledge. Picking the right mole trap will spin your head just because there are over 50 kinds of traps available. On the other hand, there are only TWO traps that have very high kill rates in any landscape situation.
The first trap is called “Mole Eliminator” and is based on a step-on mechanism which opens scissors like blades in mole tunnels, and ones a mole runs through it the scissors close killing the mole. The cost of this trap is from $25-35 if you buy online and may be a bit more expensive in a retail store.
